Celebrate Waisak at Amanjiwo with a five-day Spiritual Retreat (May 07-12, 2009)

Sunset over the Borobudur
Overlooking the 9th century Buddhist sanctuary of Borobudur, Amanjiwo provides the ideal base for exploring the rich legacy that has made Central Java the cultural heart of Indonesia. To mark the celebration of Waisak which commemorates the life of Buddha, Amanjiwo is offering a special five-day Spiritual Retreat from May 07 – 12, led by Professor Craig W. Smith.
On the eve of Waisak (May 08), the celebration of Buddha’s life will begin in Amanjiwo’s candle-lit library with a lecture on the significance of Waisak, the practice of Waisak meditation and the principles of Buddhism.
The following day, guests will take part in the annual procession of thousands of Buddhist followers retracing the steps taken on Buddha’s original pilgrimage with a walk from Candi Mendut to Borobudur. Monks will perform a blessing and give offerings around Borobudur to commemorate Buddha’s birthday. To witness this age-old celebration is deeply moving.
In addition to the celebrations, the retreat involves meditation instruction, lectures on the sweeping history of Buddhism in Central Java, Hatha Yoga sessions and discussions on the holistic benefits associated with bringing meditation into one’s daily life. One morning will be devoted to a silent walking meditation to Borobudur and other meditation sessions will be held in little known sacred spots in the countryside nearby. There will also be plenty of leisure time for personal meditation, exploration of the countryside and enjoyment of Amanjiwo’s exceptional facilities.
The retreat includes daily meditation instruction and lectures, daily breakfast, a welcome dinner with Professor Craig W. Smith and entrance fees to Borodubur, Mendut temple and all Waisak events.
