Itinerary

Itinerary
Note: This itinerary is intended as a guide only. Local conditions and weather may necessitate variations to the programme and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described.
Be aware that all times stated are approximate, and may vary with individual and group fitness.

Day 01 / Tue / Jun 01 or Aug 03 / Bangkok – Paro – Shakedown ride
After the awe-inspiring early morning mountain flight from Bangkok, Uma Paro staff will welcome you at the Paro Airport for the 10-minute transfer to the property. We invite you for a short, guided shake down ride in the afternoon around the airport for orientation and acclimatization purposes. This evening you are invited to a fire-light courtyard welcome dinner and briefing.

Duration: 2-3 hours riding, gently undulating with a final steep ascent/descent to/from Uma Paro
Distance: 10-15km
Trail Conditions: 100% road
Difficulty: EASY
Guided with support vehicle
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 02 / Wed / Jul 21 or Oct 06 / Paro Valley and Do Chhu excursions – Kyichu, Drukgyel & Rinpung Dzong
Today’s ride takes in all the main highlights of the Paro valley (2,280m) and heads off the beaten track up a little visited side valley giving another opportunity to stretch legs and acclimatize whilst also sightseeing from the saddle.
Sweeping down to the valley floor we follow the Pa Chhu (river) via a traditional covered bridge (Nyamai Zam) and then past the main archery ground, Ugyen Pelri Palace and into Paro town. We head off road at Dob Shari alongside the Do Chhu past several temples and traditional farmhouses climbing very gradually up to the village of Dobshaptoe. Having negotiated the narrow lanes we return to Paro via a higher track rejoining the tarmac to pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree that bears fruit all year round. Continuing up the valley (either by road or on tracks) with Taktsang Goemba (Tiger’s Nest Monastery) perched above we wind through villages, rice paddies and pine forest to the roadhead (next stop Tibet) and archery ground at Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1644 by Zabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to control northern route to Tibet. Now its time to enjoy a freewheel virtually all the way back to Paro via Rinpung Dzong – ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’, before the challenging climb back to Uma Paro (our support vehicle is with us to assist with the last leg if necessary)

Duration: 5-7 hours riding gradual ascents and descents
Distance: 50km
Trail Conditions: 40% road, 60% wide graded tracks, valley riding
Difficulty: EASY to MODERATE
Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 03 / Jun 03 or Aug 05 / Chele La and Haa Valley (2,670m) excursion
Roundtrip Start early for the drive to Haa via Chele La (pass) which at 3810m, is the highest road pass in Bhutan, snaking upwards through blue pine and rhododendron (Etho Metho) forests for 35km.
On a clear day the view sweeps away to the snow-dome of Bhutan’s highest peak Mt Jhomolhari (7314m). After a bracing ride along he prayer flag bedecked ridge it is a freewheel all the way down to Wangchulo Dzong which is presently occupied by the Indian Army, however this makes for a quirky experience. Having visited the bazaar it is a short bike ride along the Haa Chhu (river) to a picnic spot. Having climbed to the roadhead we enjoy the freewheel back to Lhakhang Karpo (the White Temple), many young monks await to offer a warm, noisy welcome. The Haa valley only opened to foreigners in 2002 due to its proximity to the border with Sikkim and Tibet. This unspoilt valley harks back to a simpler more traditional time.

Duration: 5-7 hours riding plus 3-4 driving
Distance: 26km switchback descent, 15km gradual ascent, 15km gradual descent – total 56km riding
Trail Conditions: 100% road, descent then valley riding
Difficulty: EASY
Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Extension Option #1 – 79km to Chuzom (river confluence), return to Uma Paro by vehicle
Extension Option #2 – Drive back up Chela La and 35km riding or driving descent to Paro
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 04 / Jun 04 or Aug 06 / Ugyen Guru Round Trip (max. elevation 2,950m)
A great day of offroad mountain biking awaits us as we are dropped high up across the valley from Uma and head off on a network of logging trails just below Chele La (from yesterday). Each tough climb through the forest of blue pine is rewarded with a sweeping descent as the trail passes through the odd tiny settlement, fords streams and runs past temples and chortens before eventually dropping into the town of Bondey. The final leg lies parallel with the airport where that final climb back to Uma awaits.

Duration: 45 minute drive to drop off, 5-6 hours riding
Distance: 25-30km riding
Trail Conditions: 80% off road on logging trails, 20% road, some challenging ascents
Difficulty: MODERATE TO HARD
Guided with picnic
Overnight : Uma Paro

Day 05 / Jun 05 or Aug 07 / Paro to Punakha Valley
Think of the poor folks stuck in buses and cars for the whole of their journeys as we spin down the verdant Paro Valley with the raging Pa Chhu to one side all the way to the Chuzom (river confluence) checkpoint. Having taken in the magnificent view of the Himalayan range (weather permitting) we take advantage of a lift all the way up to the Dochhu La (3,140m) and then once again escape the confines of our vehicle for a magnificent winding 1,000m descent into the low, warm and lush Punakha valley (1,250m). A short ride across rice paddies takes us to Chimmi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, a Tibetan Buddhist saint known popularly as the “Divine Madman” infamous for his colourful and sometimes outrageous adherence to the Buddhist faith.
The temple sits atop a picturesque hill surrounded by rice fields. Drukpa Kuenley built a chorten on the site in the 14th century, and it has long been a pilgrimage site for childless couples. Our hotel for the night is not much further but involves a climb if tired legs allow.

Duration: 4-6 hours riding plus 3-4 hours driving
Distance: 18km Uma Paro to Chuzom, 48km drive to Dochu La, 42km descent to Chimmi Lhakhang,
8km to Meri Puensum Hotel – total 68km riding
Trail Conditions: 100% road, gradually down Paro Valley, switchbacks from pass, valley ride Punakha
Difficulty: EASY
Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Meri Puensum, Punakha

Day 06 / Jun 06 or Aug 08 / Punakha & environs
Great sightseeing coupled with the first ever, designated mountain biking trail in Bhutan. After breakfast riding up the valley the massive architectural edifice of the 17th century Punakha Dzong (fortress/monastery) soon looms into view. Built in 1637 by Zhabdung Nawang Namgyal in a commanding position at the confluence of the Po Chhu and Mo Chhu (Father and Mother rivers). Bhutan’s second oldest dzong goes by the full name of Druk Pungthang Decchen Phodrang (the Palace of Great Happiness) and is arguably the country’s most attractive. It served as the seat of the Kingdom’s government until the time of the second King and today serves as the winter home of Je Khempo, the head abbot of Bhutan, along with a retinue of 1,000 monks. After a look around we head out on an exciting single-track trail along the Mo Chhu to Samdingkha and a picnic either here or up at the hot springs beyond. A fast track through rice paddies takes us to a high, wide and wobbly suspension bridge crossing. Hitting the road we pedal as far up the Pa Chhu as we want before turning for home, by road or track.

Duration: 6–7 hours riding
Distance: 5km to bridge, 27km Samdingkha Loop, 12km to Kabesa, 17km to hotel – total 61km riding
Trail Conditions: 60% road, 25% single track, 15% track
Difficulty: MODERATE to HARD
Guided with support vehicle (except for loop) and picnic
Overnight: Meri Puensum, Punakha

Day 07 / Jun 07 or Aug 09 / Punakha – Phobjikha (2,900m)
Winding down from our hillside hotel we cross the river and run down to Wangdue Phodrang to visit its Dzong and quaint bazaar. With vehicle assistance the long drive to the Lawa La opens up a whole new world as once again in the saddle the trail drops into the dwarf bamboo clad upper Phojikha valley complete with herds of yaks feeding on their favourite food. The 16th century, Gangte goemba sits in a commanding position over this valley and includes a school, meditation facilities and quarters for monks, and is home to the mind reincarnation of Pema Lingpa, one of the region’s historically important Buddhist treasure discoverers. With a visit to the monastery complete, we swing along the road , out into the wide, wild valley and across to our home for the next two nights. The expansive views from the restaurant and rooms of the Dewachen Hotel take the eye across the wetlands sprinkled with tiny goembas and lhakhangs (monasteries and temples) which are just begging to be explored. The lack of powerlines here will please any keen photographers and birders should not miss a visit to the wildlife viewing hides.

Duration: 3-4 hours riding plus 3-4 hours driving
Distance: Punakha to Wangdue 21km, drive to Small pass Lawa La 62km, descent to Dewachen Hotel 12km – total 33km riding
Trail Conditions: 100% road
Difficulty: EASY Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight : Dewachen Hotel, Phobjikha

Day 08 / Jun 08 or Aug 10 / Phobjikha & environs
We set off to explore the exquisite, pristine and lush, glacial Phobjikha Valley. With its alpine setting on the western slope of the Black Mountains, the valley is famous as the seasonal home of the rare black- necked cranes, who spend the winter months here (the cranes can be observed from the last week in October through to mid-February). Our trail today takes us deeper into the wild land (muddy at times) and high up a side valley overlooking sparkling streams, finally reaching the remote temple of Tongchoe and the village of Yamuchen housing a school and the local Dzongkhag office. Sucking on the thin but purest air we pedal past forests of prayer flags and traditional farmhouses as our route snakes back along the valley side to our base and a well earned dinner.

Duration: 3-4 hours riding
Distance: 22km Trail Conditions: 100% offroad
Difficulty: MODERATE to HARD Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight : Dewachen Hotel, Phobjikha

Day 09 / Jun 09 or Aug 11 / Lawa La (3,360m) Descent to Punakha, Dochhu La challenge, descent to Thimpu valley, return to Uma Paro
Sadly the time has come to leave this magical valley behind and having returned to Lawa La, we drop all the way back into Punakha. There is the opportunity to ride the last challenging 10km back over the Dochhu La (another chance to see the view of the Himalayan range) then one more delicious downhill takes us into the Thimpu valley. From the road junction it is 47km back to Uma Paro your penultimate bike ride in the Land of the Thunderdragon.

Duration: 6-8 hours riding plus 2-3 hours driving
Distance: descent to Punakha 48km, ride last 10km to pass, descent to Thimpu valley 23km – ride back to Uma Paro 47km
Trail Conditions: 100% road
Difficulty: Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight : Uma Paro

Day 10 / Jun 10 or Aug 12 / Taktsang Hike & Drukgyel Dzong
One of the most amazing and important pieces of architecture in Bhutan, Taktsang Goemba defies logic, gravity, and reason. Legend has it that this cliffside was where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) landed on the back of a flying tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan from Tibet. To avoid the hot sun an early start (by bike or vehicle) is advisable for the two-hour climb, via the cafeteria, to the Tiger’s Nest viewpoint. Descend steeply, then climb up to the monastery, passing waterfall (make monastery visit, if open – Uma Paro can arrange necessary permit). Retrace our steps or alternatively (if time and energy levels allow) head further up to several remote temples and monasteries. Drive further up the valley to Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1644 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to control northern route to Tibet. The route is picturesque, and the site of dzong magnificent (from here, only two-day hike to the border with Tibet, dominated by Mt Jhomalhari). Drive or ride home to Uma Paro.
In the evening your group is invited for a fire lit farewell dinner either in the courtyard at Uma Paro or at our Bukhari restaurant.

Duration: 3-4 hours riding plus 3-4 hours walking
Distance: 30km riding
Trail Conditions: 100% road
Difficulty: EASY ride, to HARD walk
Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 11 / Jun 11 or Aug 13 / Depart Paro
Druk Air departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions so after breakfast, it is time for your transfer to the airport for the group flight back to Bangkok.

Outside of Uma Paro, we have selected well located, comfortable, somewhat rustic but charming hotels in terms of food and accommodation, for our journey.

These may appear short to some and long to others, but bear in mind factors such as the size of the mountains, altitude and terrain as well as drink, lunch and photo stops; and don’t forget that on many trips support vehicles allow riders to take a lift if they find the distances too long or want a more relaxing day.

How should I prepare for my holiday?
Any activity that increases stamina is useful, but the best way to prepare for your holiday is to go riding. The trip requires basic fitness, preferably acquired through riding your bike. Even leisurely cycling involves a degree of exertion, so get fit before your departure and you’ll get the most out of your holiday.

What support will I get?
All trips are led by two experienced Bhutanese trip leaders who generally ride with you, sorting out any mechanical problems or first aid needs, as well as offering insights into the area, tips on riding technique and handling all the trip logistics. On the majority of days, support vehicles accompany riders, carrying tools and spares, refreshments, your luggage – and, if you feel like it, yourself!

I’m worried I’ll always be at the back
There is always a range of abilities within any group, and riders get spread out along the road, so there is always someone at the back. From time to time the leader may need to encourage some people to use the support vehicle so that the day’s timetable is not disrupted. There is no substitute for going cycling before your holiday to make sure you are in the best shape possible.

What equipment do I need?
It goes without saying that you need a bike – Uma Paro has a small fleet of brand new Kona Cinder Cones (front suspension and disk brakes) but most keen mountain bikers bring their own bikes with them from home (or at least their on saddle, gloves and helmet) – it is quite easy to fly with a bike, and most airlines don’t charge extra (as long as you are within the total baggage allowance). At the time of booking, please book your bike size as soon as possible.

What clothing do I need?
You don’t need to be clad in Lycra from head to toe to join a cycling group, and in many countries it would not be suitable anyway. Comfortable loose clothing is fine. If you’re going to buy one item, make it a good pair of padded shorts or padded underwear, to help you settle on to the saddle. Padded gloves are important as well, and sunglasses with interchangeable lenses help keep dust and insects out of your eyes as well as the sun.

Helmets and safety
Cycling of all kinds is potentially dangerous. Helmets and cycling gloves are compulsory safety equipment for biking with Uma Paro. We can lend out cycling helmets however it will not be possible to guarantee their crash history; we would recommend that you bring your own from home.

The group will be led by one of Uma Paro’s highly trained and knowledgeable Bhutanese guide throughout. All your main luggage is carried for you and you will only have to carry whatever you require for that days’ walks or tours. All single travelers benefit from their own room throughout.

Uma Paro provides complimentary drinking water for all guided itineraries. If you have any special dietary requests, please let us know in advance. Where stated, trips include lunchtime picnics prepared by Uma Paro’s chefs.

Bikers at Paro Covered Bridge

Our carefully researched 7-night Himalayan biking adventure comprises cultural road rides, remote off-road trails, huge descents and easy river valley circuits as well as some challenging single track as we explore across 5 distinctly different valleys – using our support vehicles to get us up to each pass before enjoying countless delicious freewheels. Highlights include the first designated mountain biking trail in the Kingdom, a descent from the highest road pass in the country (Chele La 3810m), a round trip ride in the magical Phobjikha valley and cultural rides in the Paro, Punakha and Haa valleys.

Returning to our comfortable home in the Himalaya, Uma Paro (or carefully selected local hotels for 4 nights) after each day’s adventures – accommodation is included on a full-board basis, excluding beverages – there also is plenty of free time to relax, try the national sport of archery, visit local temples and monasteries or even continue exploring on foot or by bike.

While you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to enjoy this adventure, it is designed for keen cyclists who ride regularly. Having said this, on most days the support vehicle is on hand to carry you and your bike if you prefer to take it easy. In addition, two experienced Uma guides will accompany the group, enabling us to cater for different levels of fitness and allowing you to cycle at your own pace. Come and explore the Land of the Thunder Dragon with the freedom you only find on two wheels.

Itinerary

Itinerary
Note: This itinerary is intended as a guide only. Local conditions and weather may necessitate variations to the programme and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described.
Be aware that all times stated are approximate, and may vary with individual and group fitness.

Day 01 / Jul 20 or Oct 06 / Bangkok – Paro – Shakedown ride

Day 02 / Jul 21 or Oct 06 / Paro Valley and Do Chhu excursions – Kyichu, Drukgyel & Rinpung Dzong

Day 03 / Jul 22 or Oct 07 / Chele La and Haa Valley (2,670m) excursion

Day 04 / Jul 23 or Oct 08 / Paro to Punakha Valley

Day 05 / Jul 24 or Oct 09 / Punakha & environs

Day 06 / Jul 25 or Oct 10 / Punakha – Thimphu – Paro
Dochhu La challenge, descent to Thimpu valley, return to Uma Paro Sadly the time has come to leave this magical valley behind and there is the opportunity to ride the last challenging 10km back over the Dochhu La (another chance to see the view of the Himalayan range) then one more delicious downhill takes us into the Thimpu valley. From the road junction it is 47km back to Uma Paro your penultimate bike ride in the Land of the Thunderdragon.

Duration: 4-5 hours riding plus 2-3 hours driving
Distance: ride last 10km to pass, descent to Thimpu valley 23km – ride back to Uma Paro 47km
Trail Conditions: 100% road
Difficulty: EASY; Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 07 / Jul 26 or Oct 11 / Taktsang Hike & Drukgyel Dzong

Day 08 / Jul 27 or Oct 12 / Depart Paro
Druk Air departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions so after breakfast, it is time for your transfer to the airport for the group flight back to Bangkok.
Outside of Uma Paro, we have selected well located, comfortable, somewhat rustic but charming hotels in terms of food and accommodation, for our journey.

One of the ancient names given to Bhutan was ‘Southern Valleys of Medicinal Herbs’ and thanks to the enlightened leadership of Bhutan’s kings and the strong conservation ethic of the Bhutanese people an estimated 770 species of birds and more than 50 species of rhododendron alone, besides a large variety of medicinal plants and orchids, are found in the country.

Bhutanese novice monks

Travelling through Bhutan’s ethereal landscape on the way to the wild centre, we pass countless golden roofed monasteries and prayer flag covered hilltops, navigate endless emerald valleys and ancient forests with snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the background throughout. This ten-night package promises an easy yet comprehensive experience of the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, with accommodation split between the luxury resort of Uma Paro, and carefully-sourced, traditional hotels in the less developed regions. The adventure starts with an exploration of the bustling markets and colorful museums of the capital Thimpu, before heading over the spectacular Dochu La (pass) and following the Mo Chhu (Mother River) to Punakha and the Divine Madman’s temple Chimmi Lhakhang. Sampling this Himalayan kingdom’s inimitable Buddhist culture along the way, our journey continues on through the Black Mountains past yaks grazing on dwarf bamboo, reaching the sacred heart of Bhutan, the four valleys of Bumthang – beautifully rustic and deeply spiritual at the same time.

On the return journey we stopover in Phobjikha an unusually wide, beautiful alpine wetland valley where the rare Black Necked Cranes fly down from Tibet to spend the winter. Once settled into the comfortable Uma Paro, the main temples, monasteries and dzongs of the Paro Valley are on our doorstep with the awe inspiring walk up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery as a fitting highlight to end this exploration of the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Itinerary

Itinerary
Note: This itinerary is intended as a guide only. Local conditions and weather may necessitate variations to the programme and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described.
Be aware that all times stated are approximate, and may vary with individual and group fitness, inclinations and interests.

Day 01/ Fri / May 28 / Arrive Paro – Thimphu
Arrival at Paro International Airport, Thimpu Sightseeing your Uma Paro guide will welcome you at the airport for the one and a half hour scenic drive to Thimpu, winding alongside two snaking rivers and passing countless fine examples of the quaint, traditional farmhouse architecture of Bhutan. The capital itself sprawls up the wooded western hillside of the Wang Chhu and is the centre of government, religion and commerce, Thimpu is a bustling town where traditional ways mingle with modern introductions. After check in to our hotel in the heart of the capital, the sightseeing begins.

Duration of drive: 1.0 – 1.5 hours; 50km
Overnight: Namgay Heritage Resort or similar, Thimphu

Day 02 / Sat / May 29 / Thimpu Sightseeing, Punakha Valley via Dochu La, Chimmi Lhakhang
After breakfast, the sightseeing begins in earnest and depending on opening hours, guests’ interests and time, your guide may include some of the following in your private schedule:
The National Memorial Chorten, Trashi Chhoe Dzong: the “fortress of the glorious religion”, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, the National Textile Museum, the Weekend Market, the Folk Heritage Museum, or you may wish to just go window shopping or perhaps try the one hour walk up to Tango Monastery at the head of the valley. It is then time to head off on a truly awe inspiring road as it zigzags up to the 3,140m-high mountain pass of Dochu La with its forests of fluttering prayer flags, maze of memorial chortens and, on a clear day, sweeping views of the main Himalayan range. As one arrives at the pass the air is heady with the scent of Daphne, a small shrub with fragrant white flowers, covering the slopes where a myriad of colorful prayer flags stand. The Daphne bark is used to make traditional Bhutanese paper, which has the rare characteristic of being termite proof and thus highly valued for writing religious scriptures. Etched against the brilliant blue winter sky are the magnificent white blossoms of the Magnolia Campbelli adorning the tall, leafless trees. The magnolias and the rhododendrons (etho methos) will continue to flower for the next two months. The scarlet rhododendrons being succeeded by other varieties: deep and pale pink, lavender, white, yellow, and orange. Some 54 varieties of this magnificent species are found in Bhutan.
Time to stretch the legs with the short walk across rice paddies to Chimmi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, a Tibetan Buddhist saint known popularly as “Divine Madman.” infamous for his colourful and sometimes outrageous adherence to the Buddhist faith. The temple sits atop a picturesque hill surrounded by rice fields. Drukpa Kuenley built a chorten on the site in the 14th century, and it has long been a pilgrimage site for childless couples.

Duration of drive: 3 – 4 hours; 76km
Overnight: Meri Puensum Hotel or similar, Punakha

Day 03 / Sun / May 30 / Punakha Dzong, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and Bazaar, Pele La, Chendebji Chorten, Trongsa
An early morning start for further exploration of the Punakha valley, low enough (1200m) to allow bananas and oranges to grow. The destination for an optional early morning walk or by car – the massive architectural edifice of the 17th century Punakha Dzong (fortress/monastery) soon looms into view. Built in 1637 by Shabdung Nawang Namgyal in a commanding position at the confluence of the Po Chhu and Mo Chhu (Father and Mother rivers).
After a stroll through the quaint bazaar at Wangdue Phodrang to visit its dzong it is time to leave for Trongsa. The pass to cross today is the Pele La (3420m) in the Black Mountains with countless yaks grazing on the dwarf bamboo found here. The village of Sephu provides a shopping opportunity in the form of woven bamboo mats and baskets and soon after guests can stretch their legs with a visit to Chendebji Chorten, a stupa built in the style of Swayambhunath (the monkey temple) in Kathmandu, which covers an evil spirit which was killed at this spot. Winding again through forest there is a good chance to see monkeys before reaching a spectacular viewpoint across a gorge to Trongsa Dzong. Our hotel for the night can be seen to the left of the town and though you can almost touch it the road teases you and takes another detour (14km) before reaching Trongsa.

Duration of drive: 5 – 6 hours; 135km
Overnight: Yangkhil Hotel, Trongsa

Day 04 / Mon / May 31 / Trongsa Dzong, Ta Dzong, Weaving Villages, Bumthang
Built in 1648, Trongsa Dzong was the ancestral home of the ruling dynasty and the district administration office of the Trongsa district. Backing on to the mountain and built on several levels, the Dzong fits narrowly on a spur that sticks out into the gorge of the Mangde River and overlooks the routes south and west. The view from the Dzong extends for many kilometres and in former times nothing could escape the vigilance of its watchmen. Furthermore, the Dzong is built in such a way that in the old days, no matter what direction a traveler came from, he was obliged to pass by the Dzong. The Ta-Dzong, an ancient Watch Tower of the Trongsa Dzong is located on top of a steep hill overlooking the town and is worth the climb. The Journey to Bumthang is along one of the most scenically beautiful routes in Bhutan, passing pretty villages and monasteries dotted across wide open farm and wood land and several weaving concerns before entering Jakar, the market town serving the four valleys that encompass Bumthang. Home for the next 3 nights is the Swiss Guesthouse, full of rustic but simple charm with most of what appears on the dining table actually produced on the farm.

Duration of drive: 2.5 – 3 hours; 68km
Overnight: River Lodge or similar, Bumthang

Day 05 / Tue / Jun 01 / Jakar Dzong, Wangdichholing Palace, Lamey Goemba, Kurjey Lhakhang, Tamshing Lhakhang
Bumthang is the name for a region of four valleys in the East of Bhutan centred on the town of Jakar, which is the largest between Thimpu and Tashigang in the East. The area is of great spiritual significance in Bhutan, being strongly associated with myth and legend as well as more corporeal manifestations, such as the great Buddhist preacher, Pema Lingpa, to whose descendants the present dynasty traces its ancestry. The area is truly unspoilt and is famous for the production of honey, as well as cheese, apples, apricots and Red Panda beer.
There is plenty to see and do during our time in Central Bhutan and your guide can help you plan a suitable itinerary.
There are numerous day walks and places to visit including Jakar Dzong, Wangdichholing Palace, Lamey Goemba and the impressive Kurjey Lhakhang (temple) on the western side of Bumthang Chhu (river). Crossing the river, on the eastern bank visit Tamshing temple – the most important Nyingma Buddhist temple in Bhutan. Jakar Dzong (‘Castle of the White Bird’) was built by Minjur Tenpa, the third Druk Desi (Temporal ruler) in 1646 A.D. It is probably one of the biggest Dzongs in Bhutan with the surrounding walls about 1 km in circumference. There is also great scope for local village walks, along with a visit to the homeopathic hospital, the cheese factory and a stroll around Jakar town itself.
Overnight: River Lodge or similar, Bumthang

Day 06 / Wed / Jun 02 / Ura Valley and Village
Explore the Choskhor Valley and drive out to the easternmost valley in Bumthang to Ura Village (1.5 hours) which is said to be home to some of the earliest inhabitants of Bhutan. This traditional, picturesque medieval village and its temple sound and echo from Bhutan’s past especially when one walks the cobbled walkways and meets the villagers who still wear sheepskins on their backs (used to sleep on at night). Depending on the time spent in the Ura valley there may still be time to visit Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake) and/or take a short hike to Thangbi Monastery in the afternoon.

Overnight: Swiss Guesthouse, Bumthang

Day 07 / Thu / Jun 03 / Bumthang, Phobjikha Valley, Gangtey Goemba, Carpet Weaving, Nature Study Centre
After three nights in the idyllic apple orchard setting of the Swiss Guesthouse overlooking the Bhutan’s spiritual heartland it is finally time to start back west to explore the exquisite sweeping, glacial Phobjikha Valley. With its alpine setting on the western slope of the Black Mountains, the valley is famous as the seasonal home of the rare black-necked cranes, who spend the winter months here (the cranes can be observed from the last week in October through to mid-February). This is a designated conservation area and has a nature study centre for conservation studies and education of local farmers and students funded by the Bhutanese government, with assistance from the World Wildlife Fund. The sweeping views from the restaurant and rooms of the newly opened Dewachen Hotel take the eye across the wetlands sprinkled with tiny goembas and lhakhangs (monasteries and temples) which guests may wish to walk to… the lack of powerlines here will please any keen photographers and birders should not miss a visit to the wildlife viewing hides. This valley also boasts a carpet weaving concern and the 16th century Gangtey Goemba in a commanding position at the head of the valley. This monastery includes a school, meditation facilities and quarters for monks, and is home to the mind reincarnation of Pema Lingpa, one of the region’s historically important Buddhist treasure discoverers.

Duration of drive: 5 – 6 hours; 130km
Overnight: Hotel Dewachen, Phobjikha

Day 08 / Fri / Jun 04 / Phobjikha – Paro
Today’s drive is the longest of the tour but with the comforts of a massage, swim and great food to look forward to at day’s end back at Uma Paro. Time to retrace our steps back over the Dochu La for a second chance of that wonderful view of the Himalayan range. Returning to the Chuzum or confluence we catch a glimpse of the three shrines in Nepali, Tibetan and Bhutanese style which were built to ward of evil spirits near the checkpoint. Time permitting the journey can be broken with a visit to Tamchog Lhakhang built by Thangtong Gyalpo or the Iron Bridge Builder as he is known. This former saint from the 14th century introduced the art of building suspension bridges with iron chains and the only way to reach his temple is by one of these bridges. On the final leg the road snakes alongside the Pa Chhu, through apple orchards and rice paddies, past quaint homesteads to our home in the Himalaya, Uma Paro. After check-in and a show round, we invite you to spend the rest of the day relaxing around the property, enjoying the facilities or perhaps trying some other activity like the Bhutanese national sport of archery or maybe a therapy such as the traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath.

Duration of Drive: 5.5 – 6 hours; 150km
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 09 / Sun / Jun 06 / Daywalk Zurig Dzong, Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong, Paro Town & Kyichu Lhakhang
Wind through pine forests high above Uma Paro to the pretty grounds of the fortress-like monastery of Zuri Dzong. Traverse across to Ta Dzong, housing Bhutan’s National Museum (open Tuesday-Saturday) with magnificent views over Paro, and on down to visit Rinpung Dzong – ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’. The trail then leads across Paro Chhu (river) via a traditional covered bridge (Nyamai Zam) and then past the main archery ground, Ugyen Pelri Palace and into Paro town. A few kilometers north of Paro, we pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree which bears fruit all year round.

Duration: 5 – 7 hours (depending on time spent in National Museum and Paro)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 10 / Sun / Jun 06 / Highlights of the Paro Valley – Taktsang Walk & Drukgyel Dzong
To avoid the hot sun an early start is advisable for the two-hour climb, via the cafeteria, to the Tiger’s Nest viewpoint. Descend steeply, then climb up to the monastery, passing a waterfall (visit monastery if it is open – with sufficient notice Uma Paro can arrange a permit). We retrace our steps or alternatively (time permitting) head further up to several remote temples and monasteries. In the evening your group is invited for a firelit farewell dinner either in the courtyard at Uma Paro or at our Bukhari restaurant.

Duration: 7 – 8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard (ascent should not be attempted until at least third day in Bhutan, after acclimatization has occurred, riding ponies are available at an additional charge)
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 11 / Mon / Jun 07 / Depart Paro
Druk Air departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions so after breakfast, it is time for your transfer to the airport for the group flight back to Bangkok.

From bustling markets to prayer flag strewn mountain passes and from happy monks in maroon robes to massive ancient fortresses, Bhutan is certainly a Shangri La for image-makers. In the month of June the summer landscape takes on a luscious green with rice paddy fields covering all of Paro Valley and wildflowers strewn like dots of paint on the alpine meadows.

In November the monsoon clouds are a distant memory and the landscape snaps into sharp focus with crystal light, inky blue skies and fabulous mountain views. Uma Paro has developed this unique adventure for photographers of all levels and interests.

An experienced photographer will accompany the group on their adventures in the Kingdom. Our time is divided between the two distinctly different valleys of Paro and Punakha and is a combination of location shoots and serendipitous meetings or “happy accidents” with friendly locals along the way. Offering authentic insights into the magical Land of the Thunder Dragon and the chance to benefit from our guide’s deep knowledge of the Kingdom, this is a dream trip for image-makers offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to document a unique way of life beyond the sky and the clouds.

Returning to our comfortable homes in the Himalaya (Uma Paro and a Local Hotel in Punakha) after each day’s adventures – accommodation is included on a full-board basis, excluding beverages.

Itinerary
Note This itinerary is intended as a guide only. Local conditions and weather may necessitate variations to the programme and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described.
Be aware that all times stated are approximate, and may vary with individual and group fitness.

Day 01 / Jun 22 or Nov 02 / Bangkok – Paro
Arrival, check-in, show round and first photo opp Uma Paro staff will welcome you at the airport for the 10 minute transfer to the property. After lunch, in order to aid acclimatisation and to get your bearings, we invite you for an introductory photo opp with a short, guided local walk. Stroll through bustling Paro Town and out to the massive Rinpung Dzong – ‘Fortress on a Heap of Jewels’. The trail then leads across Paro Chhu (river) via a traditional covered bridge (Nyamai Zam) – this bridge provided the backdrop for scenes in the feature films, Little Buddha and Travellers and Magicians. This evening please join us for a welcome dinner and photographic adventure briefing with slide show.

Duration of walk: 2-3 hour photo opp
Difficulty: EASY Guided with support vehicle
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 02 / Jun 23 or Nov 03 / Thimpu – Punakha Valley via Dochu La – Chimmi Lhakhang
Depart for the one hour scenic drive to Thimpu, winding alongside two snaking rivers and passing countless fine examples of the quaint, traditional farmhouse architecture of Bhutan.
The capital itself sprawls up the wooded western hillside of the Wang Chhu and is the centre of government, religion and commerce, Thimpu is a bustling town where traditional ways mingle with modern introductions. After lunch the drive is truly awe-inspiring as it zigzags up to the 3,140m- high mountain pass of Dochu La with its forests of fluttering prayer flags, maze of memorial chortens and sweeping views of the main Himalayan range.
A short walk across rice paddies to Chimmi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, a Tibetan Buddhist saint known popularly as ‘Divine Madman’ infamous for his colourful and sometimes outrageous adherence to the Buddhist faith. The temple sits atop a picturesque hill surrounded by rice fields and by late afternoon the light is perfect.

Duration of drive: 3-4 hours; 76km
Overnight: Meri Puensom (or similar), Punakha

Day 03 / Jun 24 or Nov 04 / Punakha Dzong, Khamsan Yuley Namgay Chorten Walk, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and Bazaar
A full day for further exploration of this scenic valley, low enough (1200m) to allow bananas and oranges to grow. The destination for this morning’s optional walk up through whitewashed homesteads and farmland is Khamsum Yuley Namgay Chorten, a shrine recently built by the royal family a startlingly ornate and elaborate structure with a rainbow of Guru Rinpoche images and superb views of the Punakha Valley. Heading down along the riverside the massive architectural edifice of the 17th century Punakha Dzong (fortress/monastery) soon looms into view. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal in a commanding position at the confluence of the Po Chhu and Mo Chhu (Father and Mother rivers). Bhutan’s second oldest dzong goes by the full name of Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang (the Palace of Great Happiness) and is arguably the country’s most attractive. It served as the seat of the Kingdom’s government until the time of the second King and today serves as the winter home of Je Khempo, the head abbot of Bhutan, along with a retinue of 1,000 monks. An afternoon stroll through the quaint bazaar at Wangdue Phodrang to visit its dzong rounds off the day. Founded in 1638 by the Shabdrung, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong is located on a high promontory overlooking the Punatsang Chhu river.

Duration: 6–8 hours
Difficulty: EASY Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight : Meri Puensom (or similar), Punakha

Day 04 / Jun 25 or Nov 05 / Punakha Valley – Paro, Chuzom, Tamchog Lhakhang
Time to retrace our steps back over the Dochu La for a second chance of that wonderful view of the Himalayan range. An early morning start for the 3-4 hour drive means that on arrival in Thimphu, the capital’s weekend market is in full swing where colorful produce and interesting faces can be spotted. Returning to the Chuzum or confluence we catch a glimpse of the three shrines in Nepali, Tibetan and Bhutanese style which were built to ward of evil spirits near the checkpoint.
The journey will be broken with a visit to Tamchog Lhakhang built by Thangtong Gyalpo or the Iron Bridge Builder as he is known. This former saint from the 14th century introduced the art of building suspension bridges with iron chains and the only way to reach his temple is by one of these photogenic bridges. On the final leg the road snakes alongside the Pa Chhu, through apple orchards and rice paddies, past quaint homesteads to our home in the Himalaya, Uma Paro. After check-in and a show round, we invite you to spend the rest of the day relaxing around the property, enjoying the facilities (Uma has two desktop computers in the library on which to view photos) or perhaps trying some other activities like the Bhutanese national sport of archery.
In the early evening we pay our friendly Farmer Tshering a visit at his smallholding for a traditional Bhutanese dinner and the chance to shoot the farm at rice plantation time (June) or harvest time (November).

Duration of drive: 4-5 hours
Distance: 120km
Difficulty: EASY Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight : Uma Paro

Day 05 / Jun 26 or Nov 06 / Paro: Chele La – Kila Goemba and Dzongdrakha, Archery
Start early for the drive to Chele La (pass) which at 3,988m is the highest road pass in Bhutan, snaking upwards through blue pine and rhododendron (Etho Metho) forests for 35km. On a clear day the view sweeps away to the snow-dome of Bhutan’s second highest peak Mt Jhomolhari (7314m). This sacred prayer flag bedecked pass has appeared in several Bhutanese films plus many fashion shoots in the past. Once we have captured our images, we walk down through the rhododendron forest to Kila Goemba, an ancient nunnery and then drive further down the mountain where we walk out to the Dzongdrakha Goemba complex (time permitting), both locations are rarely visited by foreigners and once we have paid our respects and made some offerings the photography can begin in earnest. Back at Uma Paro our guides await in their finest traditional costumes (gho for men and kira for women) to put on an archery demonstration for our cameras.
Duration of walks: 3–4 hours
Trail Conditions: a well-trodden but narrow mountain path
Difficulty: MODERATE Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 06 / Jun 27 or Nov 08 / Paro: Kyichu Lhakhang, School Visit, Weavers
A few kilometers north of Paro, we pay our respects at Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree which bears fruit all year round. This ancient temple is connected to the famous Jokhang in Lhasa, Tibet and the comings and goings of the worshippers make for unforgettable images.
Nearby, we have arranged a visit to a local school to meet the kids and handout some disposable cameras for a school project. Afterwards there is the opportunity to shoot at the weavers centre in Paro. The rest of the day is free for more photography or to begin the big job of editing all your unique images or perhaps just to relax around Uma Paro, enjoying the peace and quiet.

Difficulty: EASY Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 07 / Jun 28 or Nov 08 / Taktsang Hike & Drukgyel Dzong

Trail Conditions: Winding rough path which is steep at times
Duration: Taktsang Walk 4-6 hours
Difficulty: MODERATE TO HARD Guided with support vehicle and picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 08 / Jun 29 or Nov 09 / Depart Paro
Druk Air departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions so after breakfast, it is time for your transfer to the airport for the group flight back to Bangkok.

Outside of Uma Paro, we have selected well located, comfortable, somewhat rustic but charming hotels in terms of food and accommodation, for our journey.

5-day Spiritual Pilgrimage at Amankora, in the Land of the Thunder Dragon

The richness of life is found in the still simplicity surrounding the remarkably unscathed geophysical and biological existence in Bhutan today. Due to a sincere Buddhist belief, adhered to since the 7th century, the co-existence of nature and nurture has resulted in a unique eco-system and a thriving mosaic of different peoples all linked by a common belief system that regards all life forms as sacred. This prevailing ethos washes the staggeringly beautiful undulating valleys, plains, deep gorges, and mountainous landscape with a force of supreme greatness; that of genuine harmony and environmental compatibility.

Itinerary

Day 01 / Arrive Paro – Thimphu
From the flight in, weaving through the valley, arrival in Bhutan is like no other. Day 1 – The scenic transfer take guests from Paro’s International Airport to Amankora Thimphu. After lunch, hike through beautiful farmland and forest to the secluded Wangditse Lhakhang (temple) to receive a blessing and yak-butter lamps for a safe pilgrimage through the Kingdom. Take time to reflect in the tranquility of the ancient altar room. A visit to nearby Dechenphodrang Geomba (monastery) allows time with novice monks who reside there for up to three years for their initial training. Back at the lodge, enjoy a relaxing aromatherapy massage.
Overnight Amankora Thimphu.

Day 02 / Thimphu
To fully experience the cultural traditions, scenic beauty and spirituality of this sole surviving Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, Aman Resorts recommends journeys of seven nights or more. However, Aman Resorts has also created exclusive 4-night offers in the valleys of Paro to give travellers a taste of this unique destination.

Itinerary

Day 01 / Arrive Paro
From the flight in, weaving through the valley, arrival in Bhutan is like no other. The 30-minute transfer takes guests from Paro’s International Airport to Amankora Paro. After lunch, hike to the dramatic ruins of Drukyel Dzong and continue on to the Paro Chhu (river) before heading through beautifully-terraced fields of rice and buckwheat. Village hamlets dot the landscape against a richly-forested backdrop. In the evening, enjoy a discussion about the area’s nature and wildlife.
Overnight Amankora Paro.

Day 02 / Paro
Following a sunkey ceremony or travel blessing in the morning, hike to the revered 7th century ‘Tiger’s Nest’ or Taktsang Lhakhang, following the trail of one of the most frequented pilgrimages in the Himalayas. After a picnic lunch on descent, spend the afternoon in the Paro Dzong and nearby National Museum, with a stroll through Paro Town. The evening will begin with a relaxing hot stone bath followed by a Swedish-style massage.
Overnight in Amankora Paro.

Day 03 / Paro
Begin the day’s trek above the National Museum in apple and peach orchards, crossing through a series of quaint hamlets and an ancient pine and oak forest. Above the tree line, the trail continues to a ridge affording 300 degree vistas of the Himalaya. A short hike ends at Jili Dzong, one of the Kingdom’s oldest fortresses. A choice of descents is possible before returning to the lodge where a steam or sauna will reward the day’s challenging walk.
Overnight in Amankora Paro.

Day 04 / Paro
An early start to the final day of activities begins with a drive up Paro Valley and then a gradual ascent up the 4,000m Cheli La Pass. The all-day trek offers incredible views of not only the Haa and Paro Valleys, but also the Himalayan backdrop that runs along the border with Tibet. Following the ridge line, hike down to Paro Valley at various points or stretch on to the Sagala Pass at 3,300m and then drop down to Amankora’s back door. Along the way, wildlife including forest cocks, barking deer and occasional snow leopard may be seen. Bhutan’s national flower, the rare blue poppy, also grows along this route. Back at the lodge, a steam or sauna, followed by a deep tissue oil massage, provides relaxation from the day’s exertions. International departure follows the next morning.
Overnight in Amankora Paro.

This 10-night inclusive adventure in the Dragon Kingdom brings together the very best of Uma Paro’s most popular experiences into one itinerary.

Bhutanese monks

The Central Bhutan tour coupled with deeper exploration of the hinterland around Uma Paro, offer travelers the opportunity to experience this Himalayan kingdom’s inimitable Buddhist culture at a deep and comprehensive level and culminates in an overnight camping trek high above the Tiger’s Nest. The tour beyond Uma Paro (3 nights in 2 locally owned hotels – both clean but basic), journeys deep into the Kingdom’s heartland exploring three distinctly different but important valleys – the bustling capital of Thimpu, the unspoilt valley of Haa and the majestic rivers of the almost tropical Punakha/Wangdue valley.

Our local guides at Uma Paro have researched a fabulous two day overnight camping trek which encompasses a night in a magnificently located wilderness campsite high the Himalaya and whole new way of visiting the inimitable Taktsang Goemba – the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

Our pilgrimage describes a circuit using remote mountain paths, where very few foreigners have ever set foot, to eventually approach the Tiger’s Nest from our campsite above the clouds near Bumdra Monastery via several other remote and spectacularly perched monasteries and temples. The two day adventure includes two picnic lunches, a camp dinner and breakfast, mineral water, ponies, the services of two experienced local Uma guides and cooks, all tentage, kitbag for packing all personal kit on the ponies, first-aid kit and mattresses for sleeping.

Accompanied by an experienced local guide this combination of spectacular drives, unique nature walks and fascinating temple and monastery visits makes this an unforgettable adventure in the land above the clouds. To get the most from this experience you should be active, reasonably fit and enjoy the great outdoors.

Itinerary

Itinerary
Note: This itinerary is intended as a guide only. Local conditions and weather may necessitate variations to the programme and can affect the availability of views and panoramas described.
Be aware that all times stated are approximate, and may vary with individual and group fitness, inclinations and interests.

Day 01 / Sat / Aug 22 / Arrive Paro – Thimphu sightseeing
Arrival at Paro International Airport, Thimpu Sightseeing your Uma Paro guide will welcome you at the airport for the one and a half hour scenic drive to Thimpu, winding alongside two snaking rivers and passing countless fine examples of the quaint, traditional farmhouse architecture of Bhutan. The capital itself sprawls up the wooded western hillside of the Wang Chhu and is the centre of government, religion and commerce, Thimpu is a bustling town where traditional ways mingle with modern introductions. After check in to our hotel in the heart of the capital, the sightseeing begins and depending on opening hours, guests’ interests and time, your guide may include some of the following in your private schedule: The National Memorial Chorten, Trashi Chhoe Dzong: the “fortress of the glorious religion”, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, the National Textile Museum, the Weekend Market, the Folk Heritage Museum, or you may wish to just go window shopping or perhaps try the one hour walk up to Tango Monastery at the head of the valley

Duration of drive: 1.5 – 2 hours (50km)
Overnight: Jhomalhari Hotel, Thimpu (www.hoteljhomalhari.com)

Day 02 / Sun / Aug 23 / Thimpu Sightseeing, Punakha Valley via Dochu La, Chimmi Lhakhang
The morning provides more opportunities to look around Thimpu before heading off after lunch. This drive is truly awe inspiring as it zigzags up to the 3,140m-high mountain pass of Dochu La with its forests of fluttering prayer flags, maze of memorial chortens and, on a clear day, sweeping views of the main Himalayan range.
Duration of drive: 3 – 4 hours (76km)
Overnight: Meri Puensum Hotel, Punakha

Day 03 / Mon / Aug 24 / Punakha Dzong, Khamsan Yuley Namgay Chorten Walk, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and Bazaar
A full day for further exploration of this scenic valley, low enough (1200m) to allow bananas and oranges to grow. The destination for this morning’s walk up through whitewashed homesteads and farmland is Khamsum Yuley Namgay Chorten, a shrine recently built by the royal family a startlingly ornate and elaborate structure with a rainbow of Guru Rinpoche images and superb views of the Punakha Valley. Heading down along the riverside the massive architectural edifice of the 17th century Punakha Dzong (fortress/monastery) soon looms into view. Built in 1637 by Shabdung Nawang Namgyal in a commanding position at the confluence of the Po Chhu and Mo Chhu (Father and Mother rivers).
An afternoon stroll through the quaint bazaar at Wangdue Phodrang to visit its dzong rounds off the day. Founded in 1638 by the Shabdrung, Wangdue Phodrang Dzong is located on a high promontory overlooking the Punak Chhu river.
Overnight: Meri Puensum Hotel, Punakha

Day 04 / Tue / Aug 25 / Punakha Valley to Paro, Chuzom, Tamchog Lhakhang
Free Time to retrace our steps back over the Dochu La for a second chance of that wonderful view of the Himalayan range.

Duration of drive: 4 – 5 hours (120km)
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 05 / Wed / Aug 26 / Daywalk Zurig Dzong, Rinpung Dzong, Ta Dzong, Paro Town & Kyichu Lhakhang

Day 06 / Thu / Aug 27 / A Day Out in Haa Valley
Start early for the drive to Haa via Chele La (pass) which at 3810m is the highest road pass in Bhutan, snaking upwards through blue pine and rhododendron (Etho Metho) forests for 35km. On a clear day the view sweeps away to snow-dome of Bhutan’s highest peak Mt Jhomolhari (7314m). After a bracing walk along the prayer flag bedecked ridge it is down into Haa – the whole drive should take no more than 2.5 hours. Wangchulo Dzong is presently occupied by the Indian Army, however this makes for a quirky experience. Having visited the bazaar it is a short walk (or bike ride) along the Haa Chhu (river) to a picnic spot. At Lhakhang Karpo (the White Temple), many young monks await to offer a warm, noisy welcome and may accompany us to the nearby Lhakhang Nagpo (the Black Temple). The Haa valley only opened to foreigners in 2002 due to its proximity to the border with Sikkim and Tibet. This unspoilt valley harks back to a simpler more traditional time. Once back (by vehicle or bike) in the Paro Valley, time permitting, a 20 minute walk out to the dramatically positioned Dzongdrakha Goemba complex is recommended.

Duration: 7 – 9 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Guided with picnic, Trek 4500 mountain bike, helmet, gloves
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 07 / Fri / Aug 28 / Chhubjakhar Monastery Walk
Ascend from Uma Paro through blue pine forest to a viewpoint amongst prayer flags on ridge. The path continues up the ridge then traverses to Gemjo La Goemba (monastery) high above Uma. Hopefully one or both of our old friends Mindu and Passang will be there to meet us. A wide plateau flanked by orchards and forest is reached after a short climb from the monastery. Linger here awhile soaking up the magnificent mountain views and exploring the ruined fortress, deserted farmhouses and nearby Chhubjakhar monastery. There is now the option to either head off on a longer walk for further exploration or turn back for Uma Paro.

Duration: 5 – 7 hours depending on which option is taken
Difficulty: Moderate
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 08 / Sat / Aug 29 / Floating Goddess Day Trek
A magical and memorable day begins with a drive up the peaceful Do Chhu (river) Valley, up a rough track past tiny hamlets to the trailhead. Deep in ancient forest we follow the rushing course of the Do Chhu deeper into this remote and untouched valley – very few foreigners have passed this way. In the season the flowering rhododendron provide a riot of colour and on a warm day Pilgrims may be tempted into a refreshing dip in one of many swimming holes. Towards the head of the valley the trail switchbacks as it steepens and Chumbu Monastery can be glimpsed above with craggy peaks looming behind. The monks at this spectacularly positioned and remote monastery afford all pilgrims a warm welcome particularly if they are bearing small gifts and offerings for the supernatural statue of the ‘Flying Yogini’, that seemingly floats in the air. Having paid our respects we climb higher to a beautiful mountain lake before bidding the monks a fond farewell and head for home.

Duration: 7-8 hours
Difficulty: Moderate
Guided with picnic
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 09 / Sun / Aug 30 / Hike from Sang Choekor Buddhist College (2,800m) to Yak Pasture below Bumdra Monastery (3,800m)
The adventure begins with an early morning drive up to the Sang Choekor to meet our ponies and while they are being loaded we may pay our respects at the College. The initial 1–2 hour ascent of a ridge, which is steep at times though also in cool shade, brings us to a clearing with prayer flags and view down into both the Paro and Do Chhu valleys. Above and ahead the Chhoe Chhoe Tse Lhakhang (temple) nestles in the mountainside 1-2 hours walk away. The trail undulates for a while before the last steep pull up to the pretty temple which boasts commanding views south over Paro airport and from its own hot stone bath northwards to the snow capped Himalaya. After a final 20 minutes climb through ruins and fluttering prayer flags, with a last glance southwards we plunge back into ancient forest traversing for about 40 minutes then come out onto a high wide meadow dotted with sacred chortens and prayer flags. Our home for the night is tucked in under Bumdra Monastery (cave of a thousand prayers) making the most of the awesome views of the Himalayan range. After lunch we can visit the monastery (if it is occupied) and also climb the peak to the north (about 4000m) for even better views, returning in time for a slap up dinner.

Duration: 3 – 4 hours to camp 2-3 hours return trek to peak
Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
Guided with mineral water
Overnight: Bumdra Wilderness Camp

Day 10 / Mon / Sep 01 / Hike from Yak Pasture below Bumdra Monastery (3,800m) via Sangtopelri Monasteries to Taktsang Monastery (2,900m)
After a hearty breakfast in the jaw dropping landscape, it is time to either head straight back into the valley or linger awhile soaking up the view and perhaps hang some prayer flags of our own. Eventually we have to drop back into the ancient pine and rhododendron forest on the monks’ zig zagging trail. After 1-2 hours of descent we catch glimpses of the golden roofs of temples below and soon come upon the first of many on our way back from the wilds. The path snakes across the mountainside between the monasteries and temples before reaching the gardens of Sangtopelri (Heaven on Earth) from which you can bravely peer over edge and straight down onto the ornate roofs Taktsang in the cliff far below. An hour later and we are at the gates of Taktsang looking across the gorge a steep descent to a waterfall then ascent on steps and you are passing into the Tiger’s Nest itself. Retracing our steps we begin the final descent of about 45 minutes to reach our vehicle and drive back to Uma Paro … not forgetting to stop on the other side of the valley and look back at what you have achieved. Drive further up the valley to Drukgyel Dzong, built in 1644 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to control northern route to Tibet. The route is picturesque, and the site of dzong magnificent (from here, only two-day hike to the border with Tibet, dominated by Mt Jhomalhari).

Duration: 5 – 7 hours depending on time taken in monasteries
Difficulty: Moderate – Guided with mineral water
Riding ponies are available at an additional charge
Overnight: Uma Paro

Day 11 / Tue / Sep 02 / Depart Paro
Fly Paro to Bangkok Druk Air departs in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions so after breakfast, it is time for your transfer to the airport for the group flight back to Bangkok.

Paro, Thimphu & Punakha

The tiny Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan awaits, nestled high in the Himalayas its isolation from the world has cultivated a culture rich in traditions, religion and a benevolent monarchy. The dramatic landscapes, from snow capped peaks and deeply forested slopes to raging, boulder strewn rivers, sit largely undisturbed as endeared environmental initiatives and religious beliefs leave the Kingdom pristine and a jewel of nature.

The programme takes you into this ancient Kingdom for an adventure into the hearts and lands of charming farmers, fascinating weavers, enchanting monks and charismatic leaders.

Day 01 / Arrive Paro
From the flight in, weaving through the valley, arrival in Bhutan is like no other. A short transfer brings guests to Amankora Paro and its spa, set inside a forest of pine. The spa offers a range of unique healing and rejuvenating treatments. In the afternoon, there is an opportunity for a quick stroll to the nearby ruins of the 17th century Drukyel Dzong, a visit to some of the valley’s oldest and holiest religious monuments or a ramble down Paro’s main street. Evenings at Amankora may include informative lectures on the history, religion, flora and fauna of the region.
Overnight Amankora Paro.

Day 02 / Paro
The day starts with a visit to the National Museum, housed in the Ta Dzong (watchtower). Here, an intriguing collection of artefacts provide a wonderful introduction to the rich culture and heritage of the Kingdom. Just a short walk downhill lies the dominating Paro Dzong, a fine example of Bhutanese historic architecture. From the Dzong, the tour crosses Nyamai Zampa, a traditional cantilever bridge, and guests are then driven to the town temple, built in 1525, to view ancient wall paintings. Paro options include picturesque picnic spots or, perhaps, a visit to a traditional farmhouse to lunch with the family. In the afternoon, hike up to view one of Bhutan’s most revered monuments, the Taktsang Goemba, more commonly referred to as the “Tiger’s Nest”. The four-hour trek offers spectacular views of this sacred monastery perched on a cliff face 900m above the valley floor.
Overnight in Amankora Paro.

Day 03 / Paro – Punakha
An early departure and a dramatic drive following the course of the Paro Chhu (Paro River) and Wang Chhu (Wang River) on to the high mountain pass of Dochu La. Sights on the way include one of Bhutan’s first fortress monasteries, the 17th century Simtokha Dzong, and ancient wall paintings at the Hongtsho Goemba monastery. The journey continues over the 3,050m mountain pass where on a clear day, towering Himalayan peaks are clearly visible. The descent into Punakha Valley along the Kingdom’s only east-west highway, loops through the scenic village of Wangdue for a visit to the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and Radak Naktshang, the village temple.
Overnight in Amankora Punakha.

Day 04 / Punakha Valley
The day in Punakha Valley begins with a beautiful hike from the Punakha Lodge along the Mo Chhu through terraces of rice, chillies and cabbage, to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a three-storey monument housing beautiful and complex paintings built by the Queen of Bhutan.
Following the hike you will drive back up the valley towards Khuruthang passing Punthsho Pelri Palace and several other winter homes of the royal family before reaching the impressive Punakha Dzong. This ancient fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s head and still serves as the administrative headquarters for the Punakha region. A picnic lunch is served on the banks of the Punak Chhu, before visiting the village of Lobesa where a short walk ends at Chimi Lhakhang, the auspicious fertility monastery built in 1499.
Overnight in Amankora Punakha.

Day 05 / Punakha to Thimphu
On arrival in Thimphu, visits can be arranged to the Memorial Chorten, National Textile Museum, Folk Heritage Museum and National Library. After lunch, there may be a chance to sample some archery (Bhutan’s national sport), visit the Thimphu zoo, home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin, and shop for Bhutanese handicrafts and jewellery. Overnight Amankora Thimphu.

Day 06 / Thimphu
This morning you will head to the north end of the valley to view Tashichoe Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and Royal offices, and pay a visit to Pangri Zampa, two 16th century buildings that now house a monastic astrologer training school. At the head of the valley, a walk across one of the country’s oldest cantilever bridges leads to the Goemba where the Kingdom’s first monk community is based.
Overnight Amankora Thimphu.

Day 07 / Thimphu – Paro – Haa Valley Exploration
This valley was recently opened to visitors and remains one of Bhutan’s most pristine regions. At the Chuzom confluence, the road ascends the dramatic Wang Chhu valley where there is time to view the Dobji Dzong and, if time permits, hike around its high ramparts. The road into Haa winds up through quaint villages and thick conifer forests before leading into a valley carpeted with fields of millet, barley, potato and wheat. The patchwork fields are dotted with farmhouses all adorned with intricately painted cornices and door and window frames. Visits to both Chhundu Lhakhang and Lhakhang Karpo provide an insight into the history of the valley. There are arrangements to see the Wangchulo Dzong as well. The winding road then ascends through pastureland past grazing yaks, before reaching the 3,900m Cheli La Pass. Descending into the Paro Valley, the scenery transforms from sub-Alpine pasture brilliant with wild mountain flowers, to lush forests of blue pine, cypress, larch, fir and rhododendron. In the afternoon guests are free to further explore the valley or relax at the lodge.
